US approves first over-the-counter HIV home-use test

In the U.S., an estimated 20 percent of people living with HIV do not know that they are infected. Fortunately, a new HIV home test by Orasure is hitting the markets in the next few months. The kit, which is estimated to cost $60, includes a mouth swab test displays results in as little as 20 to 40 minutes. However, the FDA warns that the test is only 92 percent effective in positive cases, and 99 percent effective in negative cases.
