Mother gains thousands of supporters in effort to help gay son become an Eagle Scout

A mother in Berkeley, California, Karen Andresen, has received over 260,000 Change.org petition signatures (updated as of 10 p.m. EST, 10/5/2012) to help her son, Ryan, receive the BSA's highest rank of Eagle Scout. A few weeks before his 18th birthday, Ryan came out to family and friends, but was denied the rank because he is gay: "Ryan has worked for nearly 12 years to become an Eagle Scout, and nothing would make him more proud than earning that well-deserved distinction. I hope that if enough people come together, we can convince my son's troop leaders to help him feel proud of who he is and all he's accomplished."
