Maryland foes of same-sex nuptials say petition goal reached

In Maryland, you can create a state referendum if you receive petitions from three percent of residents who voted in the last gubernatorial election. To add gay marriage to the November ballot, opponents needed 55,736 signatures. Unfortunately, the anti-gay marriage group Maryland Marriage Alliance has collected over twice this amount. If the petitions are verified, Maryland will become the second state in the nation to determine gay marriage by a public vote.
