In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 52-year-old lesbian Mary Jamis and her heterosexual friend, Mary Lea Bradford, were arrested with misdemeanor charges today when they refused to leave a marriage license office after closing hours. Jamis, who is married in Washington D.C. to her partner, was denied a license because of this week's Amendment 1 vote, which Constitutionally bans gay marriage in the state.
