Gay rights in spotlight at Democratic convention

From First Lady Michelle Obama to Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to keynote speaker Julian Castro, nearly every speech at the opening night of the Democratic National Convention mentioned the importance of marriage equality. It's an unusual twist for the Democrats, who, unlike Republicans, usually keep social issues (with the exception of women's rights) out of the convention rhetoric.
