Detroit man pleads guilty to anti-gay hate-crime assault
On March 7, 2011, 36-year-old Everett Dwayne Avery attacked gay man Justin Alesna in a BP gas station in Detroit, Michigan, leaving him with a fractured eye socket and other facial injuries. Avery admitted in court this week, for a plea deal, that he committed a hate crime because he believed that Alesna was gay. Avery now faces 10 years in prison and steep fines.
