Armenia is the latest Eurasian country to report neo-Nazi attacks on the LGBT community. The "DIY Club," a popular gay bar, was firebombed on May 8, and swastikas were painted on the walls on May 15. Tragedy in Atlanta: This past Friday night, 20-year-old Christopher Williams shot and killed 28-year-old drag queen Roberto Calderon-Guzman (stage name Noxy Cassandra). Williams, who preyed on men advertising sexual services on Craigslist, has been arrested and is currently the main suspect in a second unsolved drag queen murder in the area. [more...]
Before she was arrested for filing a false police report in 2009, Patti Hammond Shaw had reassignment surgery and was legally a woman. Despite this very important factor, Shaw was placed in a male prison population by both the D.C. Police Department and U.S. Marshal's Service. Injustice in Sweden: After a trans woman escaped a brutal near-rape attack, Swedish Judge Dan Sjöstedt ruled that while a rape may have been attempted, the woman's lack of female genitalia made a charge of rape impossible. Over 500 people gathered on the steps of the Nebraska State Capitol Sunday night to hold a vigil for a lesbian woman brutalized early Sunday morning. The unidentified 33-year-old woman was tied up by masked men, who carved homophobic slurs on her skin, set her house on fire, and wrote "we found a dyke" on a wall in her home. A sad day for the trans community: Victoria Carmen White's killer, 24-year-old Alrashim Chambers, has been acquitted of murder, bias intimidation and weapons offenses. Chambers killed the 28-year-old White in her Maplewood, New Jersey apartment in 2010 when he realized that she was born a man. The other attacker in the crime, Marquise Foster, plead out for a reduced charge.
Police are investigating several Spanish-language death threats made to the members of Casa Ruby, Washington D.C.'s only Latina transgender organization. In one message, the caller said (translated): "You deserve divine punishment and death, but before death you should suffer. You are damned from birth to death." Lisa Winters, the former executive director of the Bronx Community Pride Center, is the reason for the organization's demise. The 47-year-old lesbian stole $338,000 from the coffers of the LGBT center to fund personal expenditures like restaurant meals, dog walking services and clothing.
